Jon Klassen’s Hat Box Trilogy Review
Some of our most sacred times together is storytime. We all snuggle up in bed together and read a few books and it’s this magical moment when all three babies are learning together and laughing together. It’s really such a great moment. I don’t remember reading books in bed with my brothers when I was little, but looking back it’s something I would have enjoyed and remembered.
The tricky part is finding books that captivate all three children. Killian being only twelve months likes something with lots of pictures, Adeline loves a great character and Tripp wants adventure. This week we found Jon Klassen’s Hat Box Trilogy by Candlewick Press and it really has us all enjoying our time together.
There are three books in the trilogy: I Want My Hat Back, This is Not My Hat (Winner of the 2013 Caldecott Medal for picture book illustration), and We Found a Hat. The Hat titles are so much fun – with a nice mix of humor and minimalist artwork. The boxed set is very high quality and would make a perfect gift item, in addition to the three books it also comes with an adorable art print which makes a cute nursery decoration. I am definitely adding it to my 2019 Holiday Gift Guide.
The books have a western feel with pink and brown tones. They are honest and thought provoking but still visually stimulating enough for the baby. We loved the uplifting ending of We Found a Hat and it got us talking about sharing and right and wrong, great conversations to have with little ones that we would not have otherwise had.
There is something magical about these books and the way they bring us together when we read them. We will totally be on the lookout for any future books Jon Klassen may come out with. He has a unique yet totally amazing approach to storytelling to kids with even deeper meaning for adults. We completely appreciated this trilogy.
